Focus Beijing exhibition – Boijmans van Beuningen museum
// Collected by an enigmatic Dutch duo, ‘Focus Beijing’ is an exhibition showcasing the evolution of Chinese art created over the past fifteen years in the capital. Amassed through an engaging project by the collectors Henk and Victoria De Heus-Zomer, their visits to the studios of the artists has resulted in an emblematic showcase of the dynamic emerging Chinese art field. Their involvement in the creation of this collection confirms the impact of collectors in making visible the developments of contemporary art.
The exhibition offers insights into the political and historical journey of Chinese society, anchored in these paintings as expressions of the vast socio-cultural changes experienced in the last decades. New acquisitions establishes a position for the upcoming Chinese presence on the global art market, as much as it positions the museum in the middle of an emerging field of contemporary museological developments.
The Boijmans has with this exhibition attempted to bridge the gap between identity and artistry and artistic expression, political repression and economic progression with an astute confirmation of the radical transformation of Chinese art since the late 90s.
Chinese contemporary art looks set to take the western hemisphere by storm, what do you think?
